Elvis Writes Again
Hi there! It’s me, your sponsor puppy Elvis. Woof! Boy, I am so excited to be writing to you. I’ve had so much happen to me in the past few months and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
Firstly, I’m just bursting to tell you something. Everyone says that I’ve been doing so much better while wearing my blue puppy coat. I always try to be on my tip-top very best behaviour when I’m wearing it. My trainer has been telling me that I’m doing much better, especially at going up and down the stairs. You wouldn’t believe it; I could smell a juicy steak cooking on the grill when I was on a walk this week and even though it smelled delicious, I didn’t get distracted at all. Woo Hoo!
Since I last wrote to you I had to go to the vet. I knew it was really important to make sure I am perfect, because it’s important for Seeing Eye Dogs to be in great health. I was nervous, but was so happy when the vet said that I passed with flying colours. Yippee! The vet doctor checked my eyes, hips, and elbows and my mum told me that everything looked great! This is very good news as it means I am one step closer to becoming a Seeing Eye Dog.
Oh, guess what! Mum took me to watch my family take swimming lessons. I didn’t know they loved swimming too, but there are these amazing classes where kids get to jump into the water and have a blast swimming and splashing and floating around. I wanted to __join, but knew I had to be well behaved: -was so proud when everyone commented on how calm I was
I had the most awesome thing happen to me… I had a birthday! I didn’t know a thing about birthdays, but suddenly my whole family was around me singing “Happy Birthday” to me. And then (would you believe it?) I got a birthday present! It was a rubber toy that they told me was called a “kong”. It took me a little while to figure it out but when I chewed on my kong I discovered it was full of my favourite food treats. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving! Woo Hoo! It was the best day!
My trainer tells me I’ve been doing so much better with toileting, but sometimes I’m too excited to get to work that I don’t go when my mum tells me to. That can mean that I get a little distracted during my training until we stop so I can go. Oopsie! I’m working my tail off with my trainer so that I can get better at it.
I’ve been practicing walking in my blue coat in busy streets, on public transport, and through shopping centres and markets. If I get the hang of these things, I will be able to work with someone who is blind or has low vision within the coming year.
I’ve been working especially hard as I hear that I’m coming up to my 12 month assessment. If I pass, I will join the formal training program. I am so excited about being a Seeing Eye Dog, and I really, really hope I make the cut!
You’ll never believe who I got to see! My brother Enricos. Our carers have become friends and we got to have a play date in the park. It was so much fun running around with him and catching up on all the amazing things we’ve done and learned over the past year.
After our adventure, we both showed off our good behaviour at a café while our carers had a coffee and talked about how well we’re both doing. I must say, it made me hold my head up very high when I heard them saying that Enricos and I were such well behaved pups!
I’ve included a photo of Enricos and I together just mucking about and having the best time ever. We really have become best friends.
I hope that you had a nice Easter weekend. Mine was pup-tastic! I got to go on all sorts of adventures on the streets of Melbourne and even got to go to a nice restaurant. It was hard work, but I managed to stay cairn even with all those incredible and interesting smells. Oh! And I got to go on a trip to Port Melbourne and play on the beach. I had so much fun running and rolling about on the sand, but was happy to stay out of the water-it was too cold! Bur!
Sometimes, I lie in a sunny spot and just think how grateful I am to you for making all this possible for me. Remembering you makes me work extra hard to be the best trainee Seeing Eye Puppy that I can be. Thank you so much for sponsoring me!
Next time I write I hope to have news about how I did with my 12 month assessment. Wish me luck. I hope I can make you and mum proud. Paws crossed!
Love and cuddles!
